Knitting Knews 2011

The knitting group will not be meeting in August, we will relaunch in September.

The St. Andrew’s knitting group began knitting for charity in the Autumn of 2008. Since then we have grown slowly in numbers and ability and produced an incredible body of work.

Last year was another successful year for our knitting group. We made new friends and started new projects.

During the year we kept up with our familiar projects and one which most people enjoy is knitting squares for baby blankets. Some of these blankets go to the Heath hospital and some to Africa.

Some of our group enjoy the challenge of scarves and these are welcomed by the asylum seekers, others enjoy making hats which either go with the scarves or are sent to the Sailors Society.

Last year we were put in touch with Angela Gorman a remarkable lady who after watching a programme about the dangers mothers face when giving birth in Africa set up her own charity to help. This charity which is now called Life for African Mothers visits hospitals in sub-Saharan Africa taking drugs and medical personnel out to African hospitals. Our role is to knit and supply baby clothes and blankets for the mothers. These are used very successfully to encourage mothers to come to the hospitals as they are told they will be given a bundle of baby clothes every time they come. We have been really pleased to help and to know that we are making a difference.

Another new project which we were introduced to by City U.R.C. Church is the knitting of Prayer Shawls. These have been done for many years in the States and are now finding a role in this country. The idea is that a knitter prayerfully knits a shawl for someone who is a crisis point in their lives, this may be because of grief or bereavement or some other traumatic event. On completion the shawl, which may have been blessed in church, is given to the person and told that it represents the  warmth of the love of God and comes with our prayers for their well being.

We meet on the last Thursday of every month from 2p.m.-3.30p.m. and welcome anyone what ever their skill level. We find we are continually picking up tips from one another and some who thought they couldn’t knit are now cabling confidently. If you’d like to knit do join us. Similarly if you would like to support us but cannot join our meetings we can arrange something to suit. So do spread the word.
